Tempest Movie

1/31
Were the portrayals of Prospero, Miranda, Ariel, Caliban, and Ferdinand in today's movie similar or different to what you had imagined in your head while reading the play?  Give specific support for your answer.

Prospero and Miranda were very similar to what I had imagined. Prospero has a weathered look that shows his age and the fact that he has been living on an island. Miranda is young and innocent, and made me laugh when she first saw Ferdinand. Ariel and Caliban...

  2. Prospero was pretty much like the image in my head. He was older and not like a warm hugging father but he more of a distant father who still loves his child. Ariel was very different than what I expected, I figured Ariel would be a little fairy around the size of Tinker Bell. Miranda fit my expectations, she looked older than 15 so that did surprise me. Her hair was also wilder than I expected it to be, I understand that she is living on an island but I guess I still pictured her status as the daughter of the Duke of Milan. Caliban was a lot hairier than I pictured in my mind though in the play it does describe him as a hairy native to the island so it is understandable why he is so hairy. I pictured a character more like Shuler Hensley in Someone Like You. Finally, Ferdinand was exactly what I pictured, wearing fancy clothing, the long hair, the soft personality and the soft tone. For the time setting, he is attractive. His look might not be considered attractive now but it fit the description for this play.

  3. For the most part the portrayals of the characters matched up with my preconceived notions. I had pictured Prospero looking younger and less haggard, but I think it makes since after what he has been through for him to be depicted that way. Miranda was as I had imagined her, but I was surprised by how nice her dress was considering she lives on an island. I spent quite a bit of time thinking about how the makers of the film would explain it. Maybe Prospero enchanted it to grow with her and not wear out, or maybe he had simply created the dress for her using his magic. Caliban was Hairier than I had imagined, and Ariel well, there were a lot of things that didn't fit with my image of Ariel. First of all I had imagined him clothed, maybe not in a traditional sense, but at lease in vines or something, and I was also distracted by his laying on the ground and moving about while Prospero was threatening putting him back in a tree. Overall, I didn't detest him or anything, and I think he would be a hard character to be. I liked the depictions of most of the characters and overall I liked the film as well.

The characters mostly fit my expectations. Prospero was a bit more weathered than I imagined, but still had the fatherly look I envisioned. Miranda looked almost exactly the same as I had pictured her, although during the movie it occurred to me that it was a bit odd for her to be wearing a fancy dress. Caliban was hairier than I expected, and he took me by surprise. He seemed much less believable and more of a joke in the movie. I had pictured Ariel as a tiny, tinkerbell-like fairy... which he was not. Last but not least, Ferdinand was just like I had pictured him. He looked like something out of a Disney movie!

  5. Most of the characters were portrayed exactly how I would expect. Those characters being Prospero, Miranda, Caliban, and Ferdinand. I pictured Prospero to be like a somewhat elderly, wise man. Miranda is a young, pretty girl, which I expected. Caliban is only a little different than I expected. I did expect him to be beastly and ugly, but I did not expect him to be as hairy as he is! Ferdinand is a young, handsome fellow, which I definitely expected. The only one I didn't really expected to be pictured as he is, is Ariel. I expected Ariel to be more of smaller, fairy like figure (like Rose said above). This is not how he is portrayed though. He is portrayed strangely, like a man, and it makes uncomfortable to watch him act.

  6. Most of the characters were portrayed similar to how I expected them to be. Prospero came off as an older individual who at times seems full of himself and power. Miranda seemed innocent and somewhat sheltered from the "real" world. Like Zach, I expected Ariel to appear more like a fairy, rather than a grown man who disappears whenever he wants too. I also somewhat expected him to have some sort of magical essence about him, but I was mistaken. Caliban appeared as how I imagined him, but I was not expecting him to be as hairy as he was. Ferdinand appeared as expected. He resembled a young prince who is well mannered and respectable, which is what I pictured.

  7. In my mind Prospero was a little bit younger and more handsome and wearing the clothing of a nobleman. I thought it was odd how Miranda was wearing much nicer clothes than Prospero, though I suppose that Prospero cared more about Miranda and her comfort than his own. Miranda was younger in my head. She is supposed to be around 15, but she looks much older than that. I always imagined Ariel as a male Tinkerbelle wearing a tunic and dressed somewhat like a peasant. I certainly did not imagine an almost naked man. Caliban was much weirder, for lack of a better, than I pictured. My Caliban is a few inches taller than the average man, heavy set, and dirty. He is hairy, but hairy in an Essau way not a Big Foot way. Ferdinand was spot on, a Prince Charming, though maybe older than I pictured.

  8. Prospero was a pretty good fit to me. I did imagine him with a bit more hair on his head, and I didn't imagine his coat/cloak as being black, but more magical and brighter. Miranda was good, but I don't think that I imagined her with those clothes on, especially because they are on an island they have been on since she was three. I, like Becca, also imagined her younger, as she is supposed to be 15. I did not imagine Caliban as he was. I thought he would be dressed just in plain clothes, and not be quite as hairy, just a rough person. Ariel was not at all what I expected either. I imagined him clothed, and not as much like a man but more like a fairy. I also did not imagine him making the strange expressions he did in the film - he looked like he would go into his own little world. As for Ferdinand, I did imagine him like he was, but maybe a tad bit younger, because he was going to marry Miranda, and she is 15.

  9. This is Kirstiana, but it says Ana on the thing for some reason and I can't figure out how to change it. None of the characters really looked completely how I thought they were going to (well except Gonzalo, he looked almost completely right). I imagined Prospero a little younger and more powerful and mighty looking, although it makes sense the way they portrayed him, I thought through all his speeches and plotting that he wouldn’t look as nice and kind as he did. I thought Miranda would look younger, because she’s supposed to be 15, but she did have the extreme innocence I associated with Miranda, since she’d only known life on the island. Although I didn’t expect her to be dressed up that nicely, I was wondering where she got the clothes from and the necklace. Caliban kind of was what I had imagined, since I had thought of one of those drawings of an earlier form of man that later evolved into mankind, which he kind of aligned to. I expected Ariel to be that kind of creepy eerie way he was, but I did not imagine him to be dancing around and wearing almost no clothes. I know this wouldn’t be able to be done in a movie, but I imagined him kind of wispy, half-there looking and with pointed ears and skinny and not that tall, kind of like Peter Pan in a way, but more eccentric and a little scary. Ferdinand was completely how I had imagined him in his mannerisms, he fell in love with Miranda so quickly and had the self-confidence from being Prince of Naples I imagined, but I imagined him younger, too, since he was around Miranda’s age.

  10. This is Graham. Many of the characters in the film matched what I imagined them to be like from the text, except for Ariel. I expected him to be a bit more majestic, with colorful garments and such. Instead, he ends up looking rather primitive. Miranda was a bit more frantic, more emotional, at the beginning than I had imagined her to be in the text, but otherwise she was what I expected. Prospero was, for the most part, what I expected, but he had a meaner tone toward Ferdinand than I had expected.

  11. The characters in the movie mostly matched up to how I had imagined them. Prospero was close to how I thought he should look. I felt like he should be a few years older looking but played by the same actor. Gonzalo was exactly how I would have made him look. I felt like Miranda looked way to old to be 15 years old even though she was the correct height. Caliban looked nothing like I had him imagined as, he was way to hairy and ended up looking like a cave man to me. I think they could have thinned the hair a good bit and he would have looked ok. He does have the cave man slave thing going on so I guess they did an ok job with him. I defiantly can believe that he tried to rape Miranda. Ariel looked nothing like I thought he would. To me he looked like an albino Arian with weird eyes and no clothes. Then when you add that he is really creepy and has a weird voice and never blinks you just feel that he doesn't belong. To me personally he doesn't seem like a sprite more like a fairy. Ferdinand was well played and was exactly the look that I was expecting. Over all most of the characters looked how I thought they should.

  13. Prospero was exactly how I imagined. He had the stereotypical beard and hairstyle like most older fathers have. His cloak was also how I imagined it. Since his powers were magic and not God related, I figured the cloak wouldn't be too bright. Miranda also fit the description that I had predetermined. She possesses an obedient temperament and her clothes are somewhat fitting for her position. She also has a pure being as well. Ariel is portrayed as more of a feminine character though I imagined him to be more like Tinker Bell or Peter Pan. I also expected him to have on a certain outfit that wouldn't totally clothe him sort of like a cherubim, but they are total opposites. Caliban was the excessively hairy and monster-like creature I had conjured up. Caliban's image is pretty funny though. Ferdinand portrays your typical knight in shining armor with a willingness to fight. His bravery is depicted just as I though it would be and him meeting Miranda went as I thought it would. Some of the scenes so far are sort of cliche, but it also has that creative wildside that keeps you watching. I compared Prospero's cloak to that of Joseph's in the Bible and I compared the characteristics of being hairy with Caliban and Esau.

  14. The characters were pretty similar to how I imagined them. Prospero was the older, wiser father-figure I imagined him as. In the book, when Prospero took off his cloak, he became less magical and more father-like to Miranda. However, in the movie, I didn't see Prospero act very differently when he took off his cloak. Miranda, in the movie, looked like an older version of what I imagined her to be. She looked too old to be fifteen. Although I imagined Ariel much more fairy-like and smaller, I thought Ariel was portrayed well. In the book, the gender of Ariel is unknown. In the movie, Ariel is a man, but has many feminine qualities. I was expecting Caliban to be darker skinned because, in the book, Prospero calls Caliban dark. I also imagined Caliban to look more human-like and less like a mythical creature. I thought that Ferdinand was portrayed well.

  15. Prospero was mostly how I imagined him, but he was a little older than I pictured him. I also pictured him with more hair, and with a more powerful voice. As many others have said, I pictured Miranda to look much younger; more like a girl our age, not someone twice that. Other than that, her voice and physical characteristics were quite similar to what I imagined. Ariel was nothing like how I pictured him. I pictured him to be about a foot tall, but also a lot more masculine and prominent, with long brown hair. I did not visualize Ariel as anything even close to how they portrayed him. Caliban was interesting. I pictured him as a regular man, but more primitive and simple. Their portrayal resembled more of a caveman (and a hairy one at that). Ferdinand was the one that most closely resembled what I envisioned: long brown hair, reasonable build, and more of a prince charming character. With the exception of Ariel, most of the characters were relatively similar to what I pictured in my mind.

  16. The characters were mostly similar to how I imagined them. Prospero was old and was a comforting father figure towards Miranda during the storm. Miranda was youthful and was wearing a dress appropriate to the era. Ariel didn't really fit my image of him. I thought he might have some sort of wings, being a fairy. He also looked creepy; he was not the jovial, helpful sprite I imagined. Caliban's hate of his captors and hairy, animalistic looks were what I had imagined. Ferdinand looked like a regular young nobleman, and was very grateful towards Miranda and Prospero.

  17. The characters were quite close to what I had in mind, except for a few traits. I didn't really expect Miranda to be so old, and likewise for Prospero. Caliban was so harry too, I expected him to be more... Slave like, not bum like. Ariel was very similar in behavior to what i thought in that he was very emotional and cheerful, always galloping around the stage being very frivolous, but his appearance was far from what I imagined. I thought he would be fairy like, not a naked british 30-yo running around like he was on speed. Also, the other characters were very similar to my expectations. Overall, bueno queso.

  18. Prospero was roughly what I imagined, the only difference was that I expected him to be less flabby. Despite this, he did have the old, worn look that I would think would come from living on an island for twelve years. The stress of making sure his many plans would go smoothly also showed on his face. Miranda was young, compassionate, naive and also pretty much what I imagined. The only thing that didn’t fit for both of them was that they were too clean. After living in a cave for over a decade, I think its a fair expectation that they would both be a little more dirty or ragged around the edges. Ariel was completely unexpected. When I first read the play, I imagined Ariel as ethereal, lighthearted but detached spirit. What I got was downright homoerotic. I’m sorry but a not-terribly-muscular, boyish man, completely shaved, covered in oil, wearing mascara, covered in nothing but skin colored panties, and making very suggestive body motions throughout his scene? I hate to say it but Ariel hit every stereotype I could think of exactly. Anyway, considering how hairy he was Caliban was what I imagined. I personally thought he would be more muddy or clay-like. While reading the play, Caliban always struck me as something earthen. Something shaped into a man but not quite formed, like a golem of sorts. Last but not least, Ferdinand was exactly how I imagined him. The black hair, smooth voice, royal clothes and awestruck expression at Miranda’s beauty was exactly how I envisioned it when reading. My only criticism is that he would have probably still been soaked from his time swimming against storm. All in all though the characters aren’t exactly how I thought they would be, they are still really well done and I look forward to seeing the rest of the movie.

  19. Miranda was similar to how I imagined her. Young and innocent and pretty. She was a little more annoying and whiny than I thought she was when I read it. But she is a teenage girl so I guess she fits the part. Prospero looked and acted how I imagined him, but I think he should've had a beard. It really would have created the full effect. Ariel was really freaky and not as lovable as I imagined him while reading it. I think Caliban was a bit over done. The caveman image was a little intense for his situation. I just imagined him to be unkempt, nasty, and rude. For some reason I pictured Ferdinand with short hair but considering the time and setting, the long hair works too. He was handsome and his shirt was billowing in the wind, just as I imagined. With the exception of Ariel and Caliban, the characters were pretty accurate

  20. Prospero was very similar to what I had imagined while reading the play. He seemed hardened from his previous experience of betrayal. He also seemed very unforgiving, with the exception of his relationship to Miranda. Miranda definitely matched my perception of her, because she was very innocent and remarkably sweet to Ferdinand. It was also comical to see her ignorance of the physical characteristics of members of the opposite sex such as in her encounter with Ferdinand. The portrayal of Caliban greatly surprised me, because I imagined him to look more like a monster, such as golem from The Lord of the Rings. However, Caliban was very human-like in features, with the exception of immense hairiness and a few inhumane physical characteristics. Ariel also surprised me, because I imagined him to look like a short human-like figure robed in a blue jester suit. Instead, he was a short, naked human-like spirit with a blank-stare that makes strange, sporadic movements. Ferdinand was overall how I imagined him: a handsome, proud, and well-spoken youth. The love Miranda feels at first sight for Ferdinand and her thought him being nobler than anything she has ever seen highlight Ferdinand’s innate charm and his interactions with her and Prospero display his nobility and proficiency of language.

  21. Miranda and Prospero were almost exactly as I imagined them, except for Miranda's age. Caliban and Ariel were different in my mind, though. I imagined Ariel to be more of a traditional sprite, much smaller, and perhaps floating by Prospero's shoulder. I suppose that the technologies at the time the film was made limited this option. Caliban in my mind was sort of a short, horned figure with green skin. Once again, this could be chalked up to limited CGI at that time. Ferdinand was pretty accurate, but I didn't imagine that much hair...

  22. Prospero was more or less how I imagined he'd be. I pictured him a little more wizard-like with a long beard and long hair. His relationship with Miranda was exactly how I expected it to be. Miranda was also similar to how I pictured her in my head. I thought she looked a bit old; she didn't look 15 at all. She seemed very innocent but strong. She seemed just as inquisitive and longing to know about her past as I imagined. I know this might sound weird, but I always pictured Ariel as a skinny little man with elf-like ears. Also, in my head he is a sea foam green. I imagined him human-like but very mythological, like a fairy almost. I also thought he wore more clothes than he does in the movie. Personality-wise, I think he's fair similar to what I imagined. I found him annoying while reading the play, and he does not disappoint on that front. Caliban was probably farthest from how I imagined. I just thought of Caliban as a sturdy, young man who was very bitter towards Prospero and Miranda. I saw the long, untamed hair on his head but never all over his body. I really just pictured a regular man. Ferdinand was pretty much what I thought. He seemed very princely and very sweet towards Miranda. I thought his face looked a little feminine and I imagined him a bit more masculine. His interactions with Miranda were exactly how I pictured them.

  23. The characters as portrayed in the movie were pretty similar to what imagined as we were going over the play. Since we know Prospero was close to the end of his life from the fact that he wanted Ferdinand to marry Miranda and he forgave Antonio and Alonzo, it makes sense that they chose an older actor for the part. Also, Sebastian and Antonio were characterized as being very evil in the play. During Act II Scene I in the movie, when they first arrived on the island and Gonzalo was trying to comfort Alonzo by telling him about what Gonzalo would do if he ruled the island, Sebastian and Antonio were kind of huddled in the corner, making spiteful comments just like I pictured that scene. Ferdinand and Miranda were pretty much similar to what I pictured but they seemed older. For example, Miranda does not look fifteen. I also felt they portrayed the love at first sight pretty well. The relationship between Prospero and Miranda was portrayed very well because he was constantly comforting her, soothing her, and protecting her like Miranda was still a baby just like I imagined. The only real differences between my imagination and the movie were Caliban and Sebastian. Caliban was more physically scary than I imagined. His whole story of being usurped of his rightful place on the island because Prospero supposedly stole the island from him, made me pity Caliban before I found out what he tried to do to Miranda. I felt that he should have leaned more on the Quasimodo side (at least physically) although they had very different personalities. Ariel since it was pointed out that his gender was not determined through out the course of the play should have had more androgynous features.

Several of the characters in the movie were portrayed as I had imagined, however, a few of them were quite different from my expectations. Prospero was very similar to how I pictured him. His fatherly appearance and over protectiveness was very apparent, but for some reason I expected him to look a little younger or have a fuller head of hair. Miranda was also very comparable to the character I had created in my head. Her young and naïve qualities were easily noticed when encountering Ferdinand for the first time, yet her outfit seemed a little out of place compared to the scenery. Ariel was not anything close to how I had pictured him. When he first appeared on screen, I was a little startled. I was not prepared to see such a jumpy and mysterious character. I imagined him much smaller and clothed. I understand how a fairy or sprite might be hard to create in a movie, but Ariel’s appearance did not fulfill my expectations. Even though his looks were not spot on, his loyalty and desire for freedom was. Caliban was also quite different from how I imagined him. He was much hairier than I expected. He almost appeared to look like a cave man, whereas I assumed he would look like more of a grimy boy or man. He still proved how bitter and angry he was at Prospero for supposedly stealing the island away from him, yet also seemed a little timid and scared when he was first introduced in the movie. Ferdinand’s appearance greatly resembled the image I had created in my head while reading the play. He is attractive and easily portrays his deep love for Miranda, even though it is the first time they have ever laid eyes on each other.

  25. Most of the characters portrayed in the movie were similar to how I had imagined them. Prospero portray an older fatherly figure look, while also having a motivation for revenge. I had pictured Miranda to be younger like my age. But I think Miranda's speech and actions were similar to what I had imagined. Ariel's appearance took me by surprise, I had imagined Ariel as a small fairy like figure from reading the play. I had also imagined Ariel as calm and collected in speech, but instead the movie portrayed Ariel as a homeless man. I imagined Caliban to look Iike a basic but normal human being, whereas the movie portrayed him like a caveman.

Prospero was different than I expected. I thought I would be seeing fatherly figure who was simply angry at his brother’s ruthless betrayal. In the movie he seemed more malevolent. Miranda was similar to what I expected except that she seemed very helpless. While this may be true in the play as well, I didn’t believe she seemed as helpless as the movie portrayed. Ariel surprised me a lot, I thought he would look less human and act more human. I was particularly startled by his not blinking. Caliban was almost exactly what I had envisioned except that he was more hairdy. Ferdinand also was very similar. I didn’t see him dressed as fancy as he was, but in hindsight I should have expected that.

  27. Looks wise, Prospero is pretty much exactly how I pictured him. Old with gray hair. However, I did expect him to have a bolder, much stronger voice. One that could give great speeches to large groups of people. More boisterous. I imagined Miranda to look a little younger in the face, to seem more innocent. I remember when reading the Tempest I thought Ariel was a girl. A girl with long red hair that flows in the wind. Until I realized Ariel was actually a man. In reading the play, once I found out Ariel was a he, I started to picture a big strong man. Not at all like what Ariel looks like in the movie. I did not at all envision Caliban to be that hairy. I just imagined him to be dirty and rough around the edges. I can't compare Sebastian, Alonso, or Antonio to my previous thoughts while reading the book because, quite frankly, I spent most of the time trying to remember which one was who and who was related to whom and all of their interactions. I never had time to remember an idea of what they might look like. Lastly, Ferdinand was exactly what I imagined. A cute princelike young man.

  28. I thought Prospero looked a bit older than what I had imagined. His voice sounded old and raspy. It did not carry the same enthusiasm that I had heard in the recording. Miranda looked like how I thought she would look so no surprises there. The nobles looked like nobles. I really liked the characters of Antonio and Sebastian. The actors did a good job of making them look and sound mean. Ariel was absolutely not how I pictured him. I didn't really know what I was expecting, but it definitely wasn't that. I didn't expect caliban too look like a cave man. I expected a hairy man in less nice cloths. -John Lindsey

  29. The representations to the characters in the movie and the characters description in my head were mainly completely different. Prospero was the closest to my mental image, while he was close it seemed he was a bit older in the movie than he should have been, and he seemed much more noble than weathered by the island. Ariel was on the opposite side of the spectrum, he barely wore clothes, while in my mind he had a hat and clothes. In addition I viewed Ariel as slightly more plump while the movies representation was near anorexic. All the nobles appeared as I had pictured, fancier clothing than the rest and beards. Miranda was slightly off, I pictured her as a taller and more powerful women, while in the movie she was dainty and miniature

  30. The characters were mostly what I had imagined, especially Miranda and Ferdinand. However, Ariel was quite the sprite!!! I pictured him as more of a stereotypical pixie... and he was pixie-like, but the portrayal was very... odd? With the golden underpants and the blonde hair he seemed like a character from Rocky Horror rather than a Shakespearian play. Caliban, too, was more dramatic than expected, seeming like more of neanderthal than a slave. However, the deformity was spot on...

  31. In some ways, the characters in the movie were very similar to those I had imaged in my head, however there were also many differences. First of all, Prospero seemed older. I don’t really know why, but I had imagined him to still be slightly young, strong, and ruling the island like the king he was even though he had been overthrown and living on that island for so long. I had imagined Miranda as pretty, but in the movie to me she was a bit too well-kept. For living on a deserted island with her father all her life, her teeth and hair and skin all seemed a little to perfect. Even though this is hard to do in a movie, I had seen her as beautiful yet a little disheveled. Another surprise to me was Ariel. In my mind Ariel had been dressed all in white and was very playful and small. In the movie he looked roughly the same as I had imagined, just with less clothes. Personality wise, he was more mysterious than the silliness I had imagined but had the same transparency. Caliban seemed to be more caveman-like than I had seen him. In my head, Caliban was very rough and dirty but still very much human. In the movie he was a little disfigured. Ferdinand was almost exactly like I had imagined him.

  32. Prospero was a major difference than as I pictured. In the movie he is an old man qhich was a flaw from my perspective because while he does retain the wise trait he lacks a look that putsw him out for revenge, and instead he seems more docile and kind-hearted. Miranda and Ferdinand were the same as I imagined because they were youthful and lost in a way. Ferdinand lost his companions and Miranda lost her old perception of people. As we see that she has never seen so much beauty. Ariel was the stragest character that was encountered as i expected him to be more creature like and less human. He was more of a fairy that a nymph.

  33. I found the Caliban just as I pictured him, a tall and hairy brute. Prospero was a little different as i pictured him with a full head of hair, almost like Gandalf from Lord of The Rings. Ariel was way different as I imagined him as a non human, more clothed fairy who actually could fly. Ferdinand is just like I pictured him, a strong, young, good looking man who Miranda could fall in love with. Overall i thought the roles were picked well and fit each character perfectly.
