#2: Antonio and Sebastian

2/1
In the scene where Antonio and Sebastian conspire together, what is their plan? What personality characteristics does each man possess that will help them succeed in their plan?

  1. Antonio tries to convince Sebastian to kill his brother while he sleeps, and after the deed is done Sebastian will be heir to the thrown. Antonio believes that if this happens he will have control over Sebastian and be able to manipulate him. Both men posses greed and lust for power, which I think, is one of the driving motivators behind their plan. I think the men are also selfish in their motives. They wish to acquire power for themselves and that power is what drives them. This is in contrast to the previous scene where Gonzalo is telling how he would rein if he were king of the island, and he went out of his way to explain how he would deal with his people's needs and make the island a nice place for them. Sebastian and Antonio mention nothing of how they would improve the kingdom were they in power, which shows that they are not seeking the position to improve their subjects lives or anything but themselves. The fact that they are not plagued by conscience would also help their plan come to fruition. Sebastian asks Antonio if he would be plagued by guilt by doing such a thing and Antonio dismisses him. Antonio's lack of a conscious helped him to usurp the dukedom from Prospero and it would probably also prove useful in Sebastian's case as well.

  2. The scene between Sebastian and Antonio is a very interesting one. During their conversation, they discuss how they can take power away from Alonso. Both Sebastian and Antonio appear to be power hungry, as they go as far to suggest that they should kill Alonso to relieve him of his position of power. Antonio has a history of being somewhat evil in his actions due to the fact that he caused Prospero to come to the island in the first place by banishing him. It seems that both men (Sebastian and Antonio) only want power, and they won’t let anything stop them. I feel that it is important to note that neither of them discussed what Alonso had done wrong during his time of rule. Neither of them discussed what they would do in a position of power. I feel this solidifies characteristics of both men being power hungry individuals as well as “evil” characters in the film. I feel that this scene helps the film by bringing forth another conflict that the main cast of characters must overcome. One conflict is them wanting to leave the island, another is the fact that everyone is split up, another being that Caliban wants to stop serving Prospero, and now Sebastian and Antonio want to kill Alonso in order to gain his (Alonso’s) power and wealth.

The scene where Antonio and Sebastian plot to usurp Alonzo's kingdom shows their essential nature. The reason Alonzo, Gonzalo, Sebastian, and Antonio were traveling was because they were sailing back to Naples after attending the wedding of Alonzo's daughter, Claribel to the king of Tunis. On the way back, the tempest created by Prospero caused them to land on the mysterious island. At this point in the play, Alonzo and everyone else who was on the ship believes Ferdinand has drowned. Antonio convinces Sebastian that if they killed Alonzo and Gonzalo, neither Claribel nor Ferdinand would be able to inherit their father's position. Antonio tells Sebastian that if he kills Alonzo in his sleep, the kingdom will have to be his.
Antonio has already usurped the dukedom of Prospero. He feels no remorse for what he has done to his brother or his niece. Antonio is essentially hungry for power, power which he believes rightfully belongs to him since he took over Prospero's duties so often in the past. It seems he has no conscience. He is also very manipulative because the only reason he is helping Sebastian is to hold this favor over Sebastian so he will always owe Antonio for what he has done. Sebastian is very similar to Antonio. He is also power hungry and strives to take his brother's kingdom from him. Perhaps Sebastian is different however in that he does not fear killing his brother while Antonio just put Prospero on a bark and let nature take its course. The fact that they are both power hungry and evil ensure their success.

  4. In the scene with Antonio and Sebastian conspiring together, their plan is for Antonio to kill the king and Sebastian to kill Gonzalo. As a result, they believe that Sebastian would become king because Ferdinand, the King’s rightful heir, is dead and Claribel is too far away from Naples. Antonio believes that he will have control over Sebastian when he is king. Antonio is ambitious and power-hungry and does not really think about the morality of his actions. Antonio’s lack of a conscience and regret about overthrowing his own brother Prospero reassures Sebastian that he can do the same and be regret-free. Antonio is also impulsive and aggressive, allows him to take action of killing the king with the first chance he gets. Sebastian is easily tempted by the will of other people and is power-hungry as well, which makes him the perfect person for Antonio to persuade to kill Alonso. Sebastian’s easy manipulation is also essential for Antonio’s plan for not only controlling Milan, but also controlling the kingdom of Naples because Sebastian would accept the orders of Antonio without question.

  5. I fixed my username but now it’s all caps…so close. Anyway: Antonio and Sebastian’s plan is that they will kill Sebastian’s brother, Alonso, the King of Naples. They agree to assume and believed that Ferdinand, Alosno’s son and rightful heir, is dead, and Claribel (Alsono’s daughter) is too far away in Tunis to return, so then Sebastian would become king. Then both Antonio and Sebastian will be kings and they can have an alliance, although Antonio figures he can control Sebastian and gain power over both Milan and Naples. Antonio has no conscience, ( Sebastian: But, for your conscience? Antonio: Ay, sir; where lies that?) and is ruthless and has already usurped Prospero, so he can do it again. He is also power hungry and domineering, so he can easily control Sebastian. Sebastian is basically just a pushover, like one of those kids who will do anything the popular kids want. He wants to be king, but doesn't have Antonio's ruthlessness, but since he is so easily controlled Antonio can easily persuade him. He also doesn’t feel sympathy or compassion for Alonso or Ferdinand at all (since he was joking with Antonio the whole time Alonso was grieving), which would help him with his plan.

  6. By Harrison, just in case if people were wondering

Antonio convinces Sebastian to kill Alonso in order to become king once back in naples. As Alonso, Gonzalo and others are in an enchanted sleep, Antonio presents his arguments to Sebastian who, as it turns out, was thinking along roughly the same lines. Eventually Alonso sways Sebastian but just as they draw their swords, Alonso and the others wake up. Both men possess greed and ambition which causes the plan to be conceived in the first place. Sebastian however, seems to have a greater conscience than Antonio and is reluctant to do it at first. This could be the reason that both men wanted to kill Alonso while he slept, and avoid the confrontation they would face if they tried to do so while he was awake. Both men are selfish, Instead of working together with the others to get off the island, Sebastian and Antonio are only thinking of what would benefit themselves, not to mention the premeditated murder bit. What is interesting is that both men have different motives. Sebastian wants to supplant his brother, but Antonio merely wants the debt that sebastian would owe him if he did so. This suggest that Sebastian is jealous of his brother, but Antonio is not, he is simply calculating and manipulative. All and all, these traits in both men show that they probably would succeed in killing Alonso if he does not keep his guard up or Prospero puts a stop to their scheming.

After Alonso and Gonzalo are taken over by an odd sleepiness and fall asleep, Antonio tries to convince Sebastian to kill Alonso. Antonio points out that if Alonso were to die, Sebastian could become King. Just as Sebastian and Antonio draw their swords, Alonso and Gonzalo wakes up. Sebastian tells Gonzalo he and Antonio heard a sound and drew their swords to protect the King.

Alonso is power-hungry, manipulative, and lacks any conscience. His want for control consumes him; he banishes his own brother in order to gain power. Sebastian is jealous of his brother, easily manipulated, and power-hungry.

  8. In this scene, Antonio and Sebastian plot to kill the sleeping king of Naples, Alonso, right where they are. Antonio knows that the only thing that stands between Sebastian and the crown, is the current king. Ferdinand and Claribel are the next to the throne but they all believe Ferdinand is dead due to the storm and Claribel resides so far away from Naples that she couldn't rule it. The two, Sebastian and Antonio, are both hungry for power and ready to be on the throne. Antonio is just manipulating Sebastian so Antonio can get closer to the throne, but he has a history of wrongdoings. He attempted to overthrow his own brother, Prospero. Sebastian is power-hungry as well, and agrees with Antonio that Sebastian should overthrow his brother, Alonso. Sebastian does ask if Antonio's conscience ever comes in to play, but that question is not enough to halt his plans for the throne.

  10. Antonio persuades Sebastian to overthrow his own brother, Alonso, so Sebastian can get kingship. Even though Ferdinand is the next rightful heir, they think he's dead, so he will not be an issue. The next rightful heir is Claribel, but Antonio does not find that worrisome since she is far away in Tunis. Antonio knows that he will be able to control Sebastian if Sebastian is king. Antonio is devious and clever. He is greedy, ambitious, and will not stop until he gets what he wants. Sebastian is foolish and easily controlled which is perfect for Antonio to use Sebastian as his pawn. However, Sebastian also seeks power and wants to be king. Both Antonio and Sebastian are bad characters. They will do whatever it takes to get power. After all, Sebastian will kill his own brother. However, I don't believe that Sebastian would even consider killing Alonso if not for Antonio's evil influence.

  11. While Gonzalo and Alonso take a nap, Antonio and Sebastian promise to “watch over” them. Antonio proposes a plan to Sebastian, explaining how easy it would be to just kill Alonso and Gonzalo right here, right now, which would make way for Sebastian to become king. Since Claribel, Alonso’s daughter, was recently married to the Prince of Tunis, and Ferdinand is no where to be found because he supposedly drowned in the shipwreck, it seems like the perfect plan. Antonio breaks down the situation, telling Sebastian how quickly and easily he could become the King of Naples. Sebastian’s only concern is his conscience. Antonio assures him not to worry, clarifying how everything will be fine because he has already accomplished it once and has no regrets. Antonio believes that if this plan follows through, not only will he be able to have an alliance with Sebastian, but also he will be able to control him. This shows how greedy and selfish Antonio is. He will never be satisfied with what he has, but will always want more and more power. Sebastian is slightly hesitant and needs convincing, but we soon understand how malicious he can become. Also, Antonio does not seem to have a conscience, let alone a heart, so this does not seem like a difficult task to him. He believes since he usurped his brother, Prospero, once, how hard could it be to do it again. With his manipulative abilities, Antonio convinces Sebastian of the plan, who then begins to desire and yearn for power as well. Their plan is forced to a halt when Gonzalo and Alonso are quickly startled and awoken. Neither Antonio nor Sebastian are compassionate or caring, but both share the need for power and will do anything to get their hands on it. Sebastian is jealous, easily persuadable, and greedy, while some of Antonio’s traits include being manipulative, devious, and cruel.

  12. Anitonio convinces Sebastian to kill his brother while he sleeps. Antonio reveals a lustive and evil charater that wishes to have power in the throne. Even though he wouldn't be king Antonio would be alongside Sebastian in their reign of power. The evil and lustive character displays a confidence in his plans that alone covinces me that Antonio will suceed in his plans. Sebastian is unregretfulwhile he is unsureabou the plan. So because he is not regreful I get a picture that he will not hesitate when aabout to kill his brother and therefore the plan will go according to itself.

  13. Antonio and Sebastian plan to kill Alonso and amass power by letting Sebastian take the throne. However, both Ferdinand and Claribel are next in line to rule. The regicidal characters believe that Ferdinand has drowned, and reason that Caribel, who resides in Tunis, will be too far away to properly rule. They rush the Alonso with swords drawn, but Ariel warns the King before they can kill him. Antonio shows his deceitful nature when he pretends to be asleep. He aslo says he has no conscience. Sebastian is drawn to the plot by his lust for power. Antonio will stop at nothing do gain power, and Sebastian is more than willing to follow if it means he will become King of Naples.

  14. Antonio and Sebastian plan to usurp Alonso, and to take over his kingdom by putting Sebastian in charge. The characteristics which each man possess are evil, corruption, and destruction. They plan to use these characteristics to help themselves take over the kingdom. the only way in which this works is that Ferdinand, which they assume is dead, must actually be dead, and Claribel, who is married off to the king of Tunis, will not assume the crown, so Sebastian is the only one left to take over. Once he takes over, he will help Alonso with his kingdom, and be Alonso's puppet for ruling the kingdom.

  15. In this scene, Antonio tries to convince Sebastian to kill his brother, Alonso, resulting in Sebastian's rise to power. Antonio persuades Sebastian to kill Alonso by revealing to him that due to Ferdinand's "death" and Claribel's residence in Tunis, Sebastian would be the next to the throne if he killed Alonso. Sebastian agrees to kill Alonso and Gonzalo, but before he does, he asks Antonio how he handled his conscience after he overthrew Prospero, Antonio's brother. Antonio replies by saying that he has no conscience, and Antonio and Sebastian draw their swords in preparation to slay Alonso and Gonzalo so that Sebastian can become king. However, right before they slay Alonso and Gonzalo, Ariel wakes them up, leaving them staring at Antonio and Sebastian with their swords out, ready to kill. This scene exemplifies the greediness and coldness of Antonio. Antonio, already the ruler of his own nation, seeks more and tries to convince Sebastian to kill Alonso so that he can manipulate him and strengthen his nation via an alliance. His heartlessness comes out when Sebastian asks Antonio if he feels guilty for usurping his brother from his kingdom, and he replies that he feels no remorse. Antonio's coldness, lack of care for other people, and greed drive him to be the evil ruler that he is, which is why he was able to usurp Prospero in the first place. Sebastian, although seemingly not as evil as Antonio, catches on very quickly and agrees to go in cahoots with Antonio in the plan to kill Alonso and take the throne. Although he shows some sign of guilt when he asks Antonio what he did about his conscience, Sebastian throws his guilt aside and prepares to kill his own brother for a chance of power. Sebastian's greed and desire for power is what he needs to motivate himself to kill his brother and overtake the throne.

  16. The actions in this scene was over the topic of power. Antonio attempted to convince Sebastian to kill his brother Alonzo. He told Sebastian that the next heir to the thrown, Claribel is too far away to want or obtain the thrown. This would result in Sebastian obtaining the crown. They draw there swords to kill Gonzalo and Alonzo but Ariel quickly awakes them. Like I said earlier the main motives of these actions were over power and greed. The want for the thrown is powerful enough to break a brother relationship by death. It exemplifies there want for power and luckily the magical power from Ariel stopped them in time.

  17. In this scene, Antonio is trying to convince Sebastian to kill his brother, Alonso. They are also going to kill Gonzalo because they are pretty evil guys and want to get Gonzalo out of their way. Antonio explains to Sebastian that since Ferdinand is dead as a door nail (not really) and Claribel has gone and married in Tunis and there she will stay, if Alonso dies then Sebastian will become the King of Naples. So the two men are taking out their swords when Alonso and Gonzalo wake up (thank goodness) and nobody is killed. In terms of personality, I think they both have major personality flaws. Antonio is using Sebastian to have Alonso killed and then have Naples and Milan two kingdoms with the leaders in cohorts. Sebastian's heart has been broken with the thought that his only son has died and I believe Antonio is taking advantage of him. Although just because you are sad doesn't mean you go around killing your friends and family otherwise the world would be more of a mess than it is today. So considering the fact that you can't kill people when you are sad, Sebastian isn't the nicest guy either. I think Antonio is manipulative and Sebastian is an grief stricken idiot who wants power. Honestly I'm disappointed in both of them and wouldn't want to be friends with them because they would probably kill me too.

  18. In this scene, Antonio and Sebastian are plotting. Antonio wants Sebastian to kill Alonso, Sebastian's brother so that he can take the throne. At first, Sebastian is wary, just making sure that Antonio isn't being a spy for Alonso. Then they begin to plot about Alonso's death, and decide that they also needed to kill Gonzalo because he would begin to get in the way and might rat them out. Antonio shows Sebastian that, if they kill Alonso, he will be king because Ferdinand is (supposedly) dead and Claribel is too far away to rule the people. Gonzalo is woken by a watching and invisible Ariel, so Sebastian and Antonio can not kill anyone. Neither of them are wanting to kill for charitable or good reasons. Antonio believes that if Sebastian is king, he will have more control over Sebastian, and therefore more power. Sebastian does not want to be king for the people, but because he is also power hungry. Neither of them have much of a moral conscience, as Antonio sent his brother and three year old daughter to die at sea, and Sebastian does not have any problems with killing his brother. The power that others have or had becomes their main focus, and they become overpowered by it, all wanting more and more power. In some ways, I think that Antonio was and Sebastian is jealous of their brothers, who were, I am assuming, born first, and therefore the kings. Both are power-hungry, but in some ways they also think that their brothers aren't doing a good job of ruling. Antonio took the dukedom because he was power-hungry, yes, but also because he legitimately thought that he could do a better job, and that Prospero was wasting money on the arts and books.

  19. Antonio convinces Sebastian to kill his brother, Alonso. They plot to kill Alonso in his sleep. Once he is dead, Sebastian can take the throne. They believe that Ferdinand is dead and Claribel is married in Tunis, so Alonso is the only one in his way from becoming king. However, Alonso wakes up right before they kill him and the plan is ruined. Antonio is definitely more confident in the plan than Sebastian. Antonio has experience in killing, scheming, and usurping titles from the rightful leader. He is comfortable with the plan and he only had to convince Sebastian. Sebastian was hesitant at first and pretended to not understand Antonio, but he was quickly persuaded. They both have evil, power hungry personalities and feel little to no guilt for what they are planning to do.

  20. Antonio and Sebastian are plotting together. Antonio is convincing Sebastian to kill his brother, Alonso. Antonio wants all the power he can get and so does Sebastian, even though he was a little skeptical at first. The evil pair also decide they would need to kill Gonzalo because if he lived things would just be too obvious and complicated, plus they know Gonzalo’s intentions are all good ones. Antonio is reasoning to Sebastian that Claribel is way to far away and occupied to come back and claim the thrown and they think Ferdinand has died. They plan is seemingly foolproof and both men are so power-hungry and insensitive that killing a few men is nothing to them in order to gain control. Sebastian is a little less insane than Antonio, though, because he at least hesitates at the idea plus Antonio thinks to himself that he will be able to control Sebastian once they are in power. Both men have zero conscience and they both have a way of blocking out all emotion and thought for what is right in order to get what they want.

  21. When Ariel makes King Alonso and Gonzalo fall asleep, Antonio and Sebastian plot to kill them with their swords so as to attain power by their absence. Both men are ambitious, and have no problems committing murder. The only thing that stops them from doing so is Ariel waking their would-be-victims. Antonio and Sebastian have their swords drawn at the moment that the King wakes up, so they claim that they heard a noise, but the movie makes it deem like the king is suspicious. -Connor

  22. Antonio is trying to convince sebastian to kill his brother Alonso while Alonso and Gonzalo are sleeping. When the scene starts Sebastian can hardly believe what he is hearing Antonio say to him but he slowly comes around when antonio tells him the pros of being king and how easy it is to accomplish it. Killing the innocent men means nothing to either of them in the end but they are disrupted by Ariel waking Gonzalo. If Ariel hadn't intervened they would have killed the men in cold blood because of their power hungry personalities. They completely lose their conscience when they get to the island and are offered a chance to take power. The the whole scene sets up that Antonio has defiantly had experience with plotting and usurping crowns.

  23. In the scene where Antonio and Sebastian conspire together while Alonso and Gonzolo sleep, Antonio tries to convince Sebastian to kill Sebastian's brother Alonso. However, assassination is not a task for the lighthearted- certain characteristics are necessary in order to pull it off. Alonso's heart is ice cold, and from his own overthrowing of his own brother, Prospero, it is apparent that he would follow through with his plan. His greed would be the initiative force to feed his power-hungry soul into gaining partial control of Naples through Sebastian. Sebastian, too, is cruel enough to consider murder, but he is also easily persuaded, which is key to the situation. Antonio's manipulative personality goes in hand with that. Furthermore, the manipulation has led Alonso to trust Antonio, making the assassination even more effective. Thus, the pair's personality characteristics are quite fitting for that of a role similar to Brutus.

  24. In what we have seen during this scene both Antonio and Sebastian are eager to kill Alonso and Gonzalo amidst the twos sleeping. Antonio and Sebastian see that the only thing between them and power is Alonso and Gonzalo. Neither have any displayed conscious holding them back. Antonio has prior experience with the power usurping. Both men see Gonzalo as complete dead weight because he essentially just annoys everybody. With Claribel to far away to rule, Ferdinand believed dead, and if Alonso was to be killed it would be Sebastian, Alonso's brother, next in line for power. Without Ariel's intervening both Alonso and Gonzalo would have been dead in an instance.

  25. Antonio and Sebastian planned to kill Alonso, the king of Naples, and Gonzalo. Antonio tells Sebastian that it is the perfect opportunity to kill Alonso because there will be no one in his way, that is if he also kills Gonzalo. Ferdinand, the prince of Naples is presumed to be dead, drowned in the Tempest. Claribel is far away from Italy in Tunis, Tunisia, so she will not be able to take the throne. Antonio seems to be encouraging Sebastian. If Sebastian does become the king of Naples, he could be a strong ally to Antonio, king of Milan. In addition to the alliance, Antonio would also have the secrete that Sebastian killed his own brother in order to be king. Antonio seems to have no remorse of feelings of conscience. He, in fact, offers to kill Alonso himself and leave Gonzalo for Sebastian. Both Antonio and Sebastian seem to have an evil, dark, power-hungry side. Antonio, already usurped his brother's throne and tried to have Prospero killed. He has no conscience and doesn't care who gets hurt on his way to more power. Sebastian seems more conniving and less pure evil. He doesn't have the stomach to kill his own brother, and he took some convincing from Antonio.

Antonio clearly thinks that he can manipulate Sebastian as soon as he takes he throne. Antonio came up with this dastardly plan, he is the smart and sneaky one in this plan. Sebastian is chosen to do the dirty work. He will be used to help Antonio kill the king and then Sebastian will be used by Antonio to rule the kingdom.

  27. Antonio creates a plan to kill Alonso and take his kingdom. Since Ferdinand is assumed dead and Claribel too far to rule, Sebastian would become king in place of his brother. Antonio thinks that if Sebastian were to become king, he would have more control over Sebastian than he currently does with Alonso. They plan to kill the king in his sleep, but Ariel foils their plan by waking Gonzalo and Alonso. Their swords drawn, the two conspirers say they heard a sound that caused them to pull out their swords. Antonio's ruthlessness and Sebastian's willingness to follow allow for Antonio's plan to blossom. They are both power-hungry and want a boost from their current positions.

  28. In this scene, Alonso's men takes a nap while Antonio and Sebastian offers to "guard" the weary men. While Alonso is sound asleep, Antonio tries to convince Sebastian that he is the rightful king of Naples. Eventually, both men come to a an agreement that Alonso needed to be killed in order for Sebastian to gain the crown. Antonio and Sebastian are driven by greed, both men are blinded by the thought of kingship and power. Both characters possesses self motivation. If Sebastian were king, not only would Sebastian have control over Naples, Antonio would also have leverage over the nation. While both men are motivated, they each have a separate motivation. Sebastian seems to be more motivated to earn the title of the crown. Throughout Sebastian's conversation with Antonio, Sebastian seemed to drool over the idea of kingship but never once talked about what he would accomplish as a king. Antonio is driven more by power because he gives up the kingship to Sebastian so that Antonio is able to control the king.

  29. Antonia and Sebastian's plan is to kill Alonso, Sebastein's brother. Killing Alonso would make Sebastian King of Naples since Claribel is too far away. Antonia thinks that once this happens, he can take control of Sebastian. Antonio is very greedy for power and will do anything to get it. For example, he sent his niece and brother adrift in a boat . Sebastian however is very naïve and also wants to be powerful. He was easily convinced by Antonia and failed to realize that his power would be limited because of Antonio. As they take out their swords, Gonzalo wakes up. Sebastian and Antonia are caught so they make up a lie about a lion appearing.

    Oh and this is Alan.

  30. Sebastian and Antonio plan to kill Alonso which would make Sebastian the king of Naples. Sebastian is Alonso's brother also. Claribel is away at Tunis so she can't fill the open slot. Sebastian is easily manipulated and is blind to the scheme that underlies.

  31. Antonio and Sebastian are plotting to kill Alonzo in his sleep. Their plan is for Sebastian to become king since the princess had just been married off. Antonio has a ruthless quality that would make you believe he would be perfect for this type of plan. He's the one that sent his brother and niece away on a boat to basically die. Sebastian seems like that all he wants is power. Sebastian looks to me like he is so focused on getting power that he is trusting Antonio, who is the least trustworthy person in the play

Breaking his staff and destroying his books symbolizes giving up his magic. All of his power comes from those items, and now that his task is done, he can forget about it. This action also symbolizes prospero forgiving Antonio and the other nobles who wronged him.

  33. Antonio and Sebastian are plotting to kill Alonso (who is Sebastian's brother...) THis would be so Sebastian can take the throne as the King of Naples. Antonio is manipulative because he draws up this whole plan as a way of actually taking control OVER Sebastian--so basically just using him. The two are both power hungry. Both are greedy and want the power; they believe they are best fit to rule, which shows their arrogance. Sebastian seems like he is a push-over...it doesn't take much for him to be convinced of the idea of murder for his own benefit. Even though he believes he is fit to be a strong ruler, I see this as a sense of weakness. Antonio obviously just wants power so he will do -- or have done -- whatever is necessary for him to get the power. Anyone who would send their own family away to die obviously needs to check his or her priorities in life.

  34. Antonio and Sebastian plan to kill Alonso and Gonzalo so that Sebastian will become the Duke of Naples. Antonio is power hungry and greedy, which is what allows him to convince Sebastian to conspire with him. He has usurped Prospero, and now that he has some "experience," it is easy for him to take power from Alonso as well. Sebastian is also greedy, but he is more gullible. This is what allows Antonio to convince him to kill Alonso. It is also Antonio's motivation in killing Alonso: once Sebastian becomes Duke, Antonio knows that he will be able to control him.
